Historical Background

The media and broadcasting sector in Tanzania has undergone significant transformation driven by technological advancement, expansion of media outlets, and increased public access to information.

These developments have contributed to the promotion of democracy, transparency, and good governance, while also increasing the number of journalists and media institutions operating in the country. Alongside these positive changes, the rapid growth of the sector created a need for professional oversight to ensure adherence to ethical standards and responsible journalism.

In response to this need, the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania recognized the importance of establishing a formal institutional framework to regulate and promote professionalism within the journalism sector, while safeguarding the public interest.

Through this legal mandate, JAB was entrusted with the responsibility of accrediting journalists, issuing Press Cards, and promoting ethical conduct and professional standards within the media industry.

The establishment of JAB marked a major milestone in the regulation of journalism in Tanzania by strengthening institutional accountability, enhancing professional integrity, and reinforcing public confidence in accredited journalists as credible sources of information.

Historical Significance: The formation of JAB represents a strategic national effort to build a professional, ethical, and accountable journalism sector that supports democratic governance and sustainable national development.
