Kipangula: Unethical Journalism Threatens National Unity
The Acting Director General of the Journalists Accreditation Board (JAB), Advocate Patrick Kipangula, has stated that journalism which fails to adhere to ethical standards poses a serious risk to national unity, peace, and the stability of society.
Speaking to journalists who are members of JUMIKITA, TADIO, and TBN on Friday, April 17, 2026, in Dar es Salaam, Kipangula emphasized that journalists must recognize the significance of their role in society. He noted that in this period of social, political, and economic transformation, the information disseminated by journalists carries substantial influence over public behavior and perception.
He explained that peace refers to the absence of conflict or violence, while stability implies a sense of security and assurance in people’s daily lives without fear. He stressed that both peace and stability cannot be sustained without strong national unity built on solidarity among citizens, regardless of their differences.
“Where journalism does not observe ethical standards, it can incite divisions, distort facts, and ultimately disrupt national cohesion. Therefore, it is crucial for journalists to perform their duties with professionalism, integrity, and accountability,” Kipangula said.
He further highlighted that journalists have a fundamental responsibility to collect, process, and disseminate accurate information, as well as to help shape public opinion in a manner that promotes harmony and societal development.
Additionally, he underscored the importance of adhering to the Code of Ethics for the journalism profession, noting that these principles emphasize truth, fairness, transparency, and respect for human rights—values that are essential for safeguarding peace, strengthening stability, and fostering national unity.
